Inspire. Be a Teacher

Just went for a MOE Networking Session to become a Principles of Accounts (POA) Teacher.

I have thought of teaching in Polytechnic actually as I am really very grateful to my lecturers in Polytechnic days where it has given me a well-built foundation and plentiful of opportunities in many areas. Becoming a lecturer? But might need to further studies to get a Master. Which might pose a problem for me ~ financially and...我已经读书读到有点...了。

I was wondering is there still demand for POA teachers in Secondary education?

As a ex-POA student in my secondary schooldays, I remembered only one express class and the normal academic class will get to take POA. Back then, Commerce (i.e. POA) subject was withdrawn from the JC syllabus at that time.

From the networking session yesterday, the educators ~ One of the young POA teachers and the Personnel Manager of MOE was telling me that there is a HIGH demand for POA teachers now as more parents realise the importance of becoming Financially Literate, which was also strongly emphasize by PM Lee in recent years.

And Mr Xavier Ho (i.e. He is one of the NTU Accountancy graduate who graduated from NTU in year 2003, who work with one of the Big 4 Deloitte for 6 months upon his graduation and then change his carrer path to become a POA teacher) was telling me that the current secondary school ~Swiss Cottage that his is teaching POA now, has 8 classes taking POA. AND you know what ~ there is even classes where students take a combination of ~ Chemistry, Physic, A Maths, E Maths & POA ~ Wah! That is a lot of heavy subjects for a secondary student.

Asked, why he left his audit line in BIG 4 after 6 months, he told us that it is very stressful with so many assignments back to back simultaneously at the same time. There is not only datelines to meet to stay within budget, and having to burn out all his nights, weekends, public holidays and the pressure and stress level with the responsibility to the accounts being sign under his name, and having to carry the litigation responsibility. Ya, being one of the auditors in the Big 4 is one of the most stressful job you can find. Scary. Especially the litigation responsibility. Morever, there are more reportings to do now with companies having not only annual reportings but quarterly-reportings and the IPOs getting HOT, which means even more work to add on to the Big 4 auditors workload!

Can I cope with it?!?!?!

That's why he changed his carrer path to beome a POA teacher after 6 months. Having a passion to teach.

If we want to teach POA, have to obtained a local or pretigeous overseas University degree. Besides that, you must teach one more additional subject besides POA.

Only the following combinations are allowed:

1.) POA & English; or
2.) POA & Maths

I was like ~ hur? Can I teach POA & Chinese or POA & Food & Nutrition ?

Got a NO answer from the HR. Must be either POA & English or POA & Maths.

As for Chinese, you will only be teaching a pure Chinese subject and no other subjects.

Which means I got to brush up my secondary Mathematics le.

To share with you one of Mr Xavier Ho interesting teaching experience sharing, he told us a conversation that he had with his students:

Students asked: Mr Ho! Where can we get to earn the MOST money?

Mr Ho: Shenton Way!

BUT

Do you mind working until at least 1am from Mon to Fri?

Students: Mind!

Mr Ho: Do you mind having to work on weekends ~ Sat and Sun?

Students: Mind!

Mr Ho: Do you mind working on Public Holidays?!

Students: Mind!

Mr Ho: Then, Shenton Way is NOT the place for you!

Reminds me of myself when I used to think that how wonderful it would be to be one of the Shentonians. (Watch too much dramas such as Fann Wong “步步为赢” last time le lah!)

But now, I know that it's just on the surface of it. In reality....
